2017 will go down as a very memorable year in the gaming industry. eSports took off, the Super Mario franchise was reinvigorated, and the Nintendo Switch debuted to universal praise. Some of the best video games of the year are featured in this list. Honorable mentions to Injustice 2, Heat Signature, and Gravity Rush 2.
10. Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood
Released as the second pack expansion of A Realm Reborn, Stormblood instantly became a favorite with gamers. This was the last version made available on PlayStation 3 and needless to say, Final Fantasy went out with a bang. Revamped battle scenes and locations made this one of the best video games of the year.
9. Sniper Elite 4
This shooter game earns the nod with its graphic, life-like action. Based on World War II, Sniper Elite 4 moves to Italy in search of Nazi forces. The incredible gameplay is really what separates this game from the many shooter games that flood the market today. Not only is this 4th installment a worthy addition to the Sniper Elite family, it’s one of the best overall.
8. Horizon Zero Dawn
Guerilla Games produced one of the most imaginative titles of the year with Horizon Zero Dawn for PS4. It is one of the best looking video games to date, and gameplay is top-notch. The only con may be the furry of action – so much is happening, it’s almost tough to follow at times.
7. Mario Kart 8
Mario Kart 8 saw a rebirth when it was launched on the Nintendo Switch console back in April. The newest version sees Mario race his counterparts with new and improved graphics as well as previously untapped modes. More than four million copies were sold during Kart’s first five months on the market.
6. Night In The Woods
The game’s plot certainly sounds weird at first: a cat drops out of college to find its hometown in shambles. Maybe the outlandish plot was the reason why the game’s founders needed the help of fans to launch it via Kickstarter. Nonetheless, Night In The Woods was one of the biggest surprise hits of 2017.
