Nintendo Switch Passes Wii U In Sales

Ten months after the release of the Nintendo Switch, it has already sold more units than the Japanese company’s previous console sold in its entire history. For those of you that have forgotten about the Wii U, don’t worry, you are not alone. It was a very forgettable product, as it only sold 13.56 million units from 2012-2017. On the other hand, the Switch has sold 14.86 million units in less than a year, making it one of the most successful game consoles of all-time.

Nintendo’s Best Third Quarter In 8 Years

Nintendo officially reported its most successful quarter since 2009, announcing an operating profit of about 116.5 billion yen ($1.07 billion). In comparison, Nintendo only reported a profit of 32.26 billion yen (about $295.2 million) one year ago. As a result, the gaming company has raised its profit forecast by about 40 billion yen. The company believes that much of the success can be contributed to the versatility of the Switch and the ability to attract non-gamers to the device.

Best-Selling Switch Games

Nintendo channeled its roots by releasing two popular Mario games in 2017. With an impressive 9.07 million copies sold, Super Mario Odyssey was the best-selling game for the Switch. It was followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which was actually a rerelease of a Wii U game. Mario Kart sold 7.33 million copies. Finally, the launch title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, sold 6.7 million copies.

There are two things to keep an eye out for in 2018. One, Nintendo plans to release a Pokémon game at some point this year, which projects to be one of the best-selling games in Nintendo history, piggybacking off the successful mobile game, Pokémon Go. The second thing that might skyrocket Switch sales is a potential deal with Netflix that will allow Nintendo to begin competing against gaming powerhouses, PlayStation and Xbox.
